Tips to Creating a New Business Logo

Make sure that you receive a copy of your logo in CMYK high resolution 300 dpi (for printing use) and RGB 72 dpi(for web use).

It is important to have a style guide of your logo. It will clearly show you how to use your logo so it looks exactly the same every time it is reproduced. This allows you to keep your corporate image consistent.

Tip 9
Make sure that you get a letter from the design studio declaring that you own the copyright to your logo.

How to Create a Style Guide

Projectors: LCD Verses DLP (The downfall of DLP technology)

The common question asked when looking for a new projector for the home, office, or classroom is: do I get an LCD projector or a DLP projector? LCD, which stands for ‘liquid crystal device’ and DLP, an acronym for ‘digital light processing’ are the two most common projector imaging technologies. With so many brands and different models available, it can be confusing for customers to choose between those technologies. Ultimately LCD projectors have far better image quality and colour accuracy. The article below tells you why DLP projectors struggle with projecting the same level of image quality.

Think of a set of blinds in your room for your bedroom window. By pulling a rod you can turn the shutters open or closed, according to if you want to let light in or not. This is exactly how an LCD projector behaves. Each pixel functions like a single shutter on a set of blinds to either shine light through or to block it. DLP on the other hand is created of millions of microscopic mirrors or ‘pixel elements’ as experts like to call them. Each pixel element functions to either reflect light or block it.

How the light source is processed from the time the projector is switched on to when the picture reaches your screen is extremely important for image quality, brightness and colour accuracy. LCD projectors process white light from the lamp by dividing it into red, blue and green components, by three mirrors which project the coloured light to 3 separate LCD panels. The 3 LCD panels form the elements of the image by turning each pixel on and off. The pixels are then combined in a glass prism to form the projector image. Something important to realise about LCD projectors is that all three colours are projected onto your screen all at once. The way a DLP projector runs is vastly different and even the way an image shows up is not the same. With DLP, white light from the lamp is directed through a rotating colour wheel with transparent red, blue and green segments, at speeds up to 11,000 rpm/s. This approach to creating an image requires a sequence of red, blue and green light. The millions of micro mirrors described above reflect the coloured light on the pixels to form the image elements. The elements of the image are sent in sequence on the screen, one colour at a time. The viewer’s vision will then pull together each coloured element of the image into a single whole image. From LCD projectors, all colours are available all the time to deliver the top level of brightness and fantastic colour accuracy. In DLP, only one colour is available at any given time, resulting in lower colour brightness and accuracy. Some designers have put a white segment for the colour wheel to improve brightness overall, but this also damages colour accuracy.

I hear in forums all the time that DLP gives a higher contrast ratio and as such must be superior. For those who don’t know, the contrast ratio is a measure of a display system defined as the ratio of the luminance of the brightest white to that of the darkest black that the machine is capable of producing. DLP projectors do offer high contrast specifications in comparison to most LCD projectors. At first glance, this seems to be a plus, however, in the real world, the true black level is determined by the ambient light in the room in which the projector is being used. Do not be hoodwinked by contrast specifications on websites and in brochures.

When the content you wish to view includes moving images, DLP projection technology also creates image marks, or ‘artifacts’. The most often seen artifact that a DLP projector shows with moving images is colour break up. Colour break up is to be expected in DLP systems because moving images keep changing between the time red, blue and green colours are pulled up. LCD projectors do not have this problem because every colour is projected at the same time. DLP manufacturers have developed 3DLP solutions using 3 chips to answer the colour break up problem, but the price of these projectors make them not practical for most businesses and consumers.

Another point of difference between LCD and DLP is how they match the balance for the refractive qualities of light. Jump back to high school science, and they taught you how the different colours of light refract varied amounts when passing through the same lens. The downside with DLP projectors is that they have the one same panel for the same lens to project Red, Blue and Green. All 3 colours are obviously different and refract light in a different way. Most of the time with a DLP projector, some yellow colour will show above and some blue will be projected below an image as simple as a lone black line. In building LCD projectors can be adapted to remove these effects on the projected image, as each colour is refracted on a separate LCD panels.

The isolated veritable plus (excluding price) with choosing a DLP projector is its smaller size and weight. However, this is only relevant to mobility and needs to be traded off against the image superiority of LCD projectors. If resulting picture quality is vital to you, then the decision is no-brainer. Yachting and Yacht Clubs

As the Dutch came to preeminence in sea power during the 17th century, the early yacht was a leisure craft used mostly by royalty and later by the burghers on the canals and then in the protected and unprotected waters of the Low Countries. Yacht racing was incidental, arising as private matches. English yachting started with King Charles II of England during his exile in the Low Countries. On his restoration to the English throne in 1660, the city of Amsterdam gave him a 20-metre (66-foot) pleasure boat with a beam (maximum width) of 5.6 m (18 feet), which he named Mary. Charles and his brother James, the duke of York (James II, sovereign 1685–88), ordered for additional yachts and in 1662 raced two of them from the Thames, from Greenwich, to Gravesend, and the same way back, on a £100 bet. Yachting was found to be classy for the wealthy and royalty, but after that period the trend did not last.

The first yacht association in the British Isles, the Water Club, was formed in about 1720 at Cork, Ire., as a cruising and unofficial coast guard association, and had great naval panoply and formality. The closest thing to racing boats was the “chase,” when the “fleet” pursued an imaginary enemy. The club persisted, largely as a social club, until 1765, and in 1828, by conglomerating with other groups, it became known as the Cork Yacht Club (later the Royal Cork Yacht Club).

Yacht racing was seen in some ordered manner on the Thames in the mid-18th century. The duke of Cumberland funded the Cumberland Fleet for Thames racing in 1775. When George IV rose to sovereignty in 1820, it came to be named the Fleet to His Majesty’s Coronation Sailing Society. The Thames Yacht Club seceded with a racing fight, to become the Royal Thames Yacht Club in 1830. The first English yacht association had been started at Cowes on the Isle of Wight in 1815, and royal funding made the Solent - the strait between the mainland and the Isle of Wight - the perpetual location of British yachting. The association at Cowes became the Royal Yachting Club, likewise at the ascension of George IV. Each member was required to possess boats of at least 20 tons (20,321 kg). Sailing races for high bets were held, and the club life was splendid. Ultimately Royal Yachting Club boats increased in size to over 350 tons.

In North America, yachting started with the Dutch in New York in the 17th century and persisted when the English gained power. Sailing was for the most part for fun and found its apogee in George Crowinshield’s Cleopatra’s Barge (1815), which cruised on the Mediterranean Sea and established a standard of luxury and elegance for the later yachts in that area from the late 19th century. The first enduring American yacht association, the Detroit Boat Club, was started in 1839. In 1844, John C. Stevens began the New York Yacht Club aboard his schooner Gimcrack.

Kinds of sailboats
The Early sailing yachts were within the design of such naval craft as brigantines, schooners, and cutters from the 17th century through the second half of the 19th century. The style of bigger yachts was initially greatly affected by the win of America, which was designed by George Steers for a group headed by John C. Stevens, and it was the boat for which the America’s Cup (q.v.) found its namesake after its success at Cowes in 1851. Earlier yachts were not designed and built in the modern sense, with only a model being used. Not until the later half of the 19th century did what was called naval architecture come into being. Not until the 1920s did the employment of the research of aerodynamics do for the design of sails and rigging what such study had already done for hulls.

Because most of all sailboats had to be individually built, there came a need for handicapping boats before the one-design class boats were built. Hence, a rating rule was decreed, which ended up in the International Rule, accepted in 1906 and amended in 1919. In the present day, one of the fastest growing areas in sailing is that of one-design class boats. All boats in a one-design class are manufactured to single dimensions in length, beam, sail area, and other elements (for an example of a two-person sailboat, see illustration). Racing between these boats can be had on an even keel with no handicapping at all. A great example is the standard International America’s Cup Class taken on board for racers in the 1992 America’s Cup race.

For the time that yachting belonged largely for the nobility and the affluent, cost was no issue, and the size of boats developed, in both length and weight. The promotion and popularity of smaller yachts occurred in the later half of the 19th century in the sailing of the Englishmen R.T. McMullen, a stockbroker, and E.F. Knight, a barrister and journalist. A trip around the world (1895–98) led single-handedly by the naturalized American captain Joshua Slocum in the 11.3-metre Spray proved the value of smaller boats. Thereafter in the 20th century, for the larger part after World War II, smaller racing and pleasure yachts became more popular, down to the dinghy, a popular training boat, of 3.7 m. In the late 20th century, boats of less than 3 m were traveled in single-handedly across the Atlantic Ocean.

Kinds of power yachts
Post the decade 1840–50, when steam was set to replace sail power in public vessels, the steam engine, and later the internal-combustion engine, were employed more and more in personal vessels. Large power yachts were developed to a high element, and long-distance sailing became a fond occupation of the well off. The earliest power yachts were paddle-wheel boats; those then made way to boats powered by the completely submerged screw or propeller sort of propulsion. As well as naval and merchant boats, auxiliaries possessing both sail and power were the yacht standard for many years. By the second half of the 20th century, a lot of yachts were still auxiliaries, but the larger part were exclusively power yachts containing gasoline or diesel engines.

During the last decade of the 19th century there was a rise in the construction of more sizeable steam yachts. In particular within these was the Mayflower (1897) of 2,690 tons, that had triple-expansion engines, twin screws, and a compartmented iron hull, and was sailed by a crew of over 150. The Mayflower, bought by the United States Navy in 1898, was the official yacht of the president of the United States until 1929 and was used in active service in World War II.

As more sizeable and better quality internal-combustion engines were developed, many large boats were using them for power. The development of the diesel engine, using heavy oil for fuel, progressed in World War I. During the decade following, large power-yacht building blossomed, hitting a climax in the Orion (1930) at 3,097 tons. In that period the biggest auxiliary yacht manufactured was the four-masted, steel, barque-rigged Sea Cloud (1931) of 2,323 tons.

The manufacture of bigger power boats fell away after 1932, and the style thereafter was in preference of smaller, less pricey boats. After World War II, many small naval boats were sold to private owners for conversion to yachts. In the late 20th century, yachting had become a internationally popular sport enjoyed by thousands of yachtsmen who are actually manning and maintaining their own small recreational craft. The popularity of yachts and sailors increased steadily, not only in the traditional areas by the beach but also on inland waterways and lakes.

Proportional, Progressive, and Regressive taxes

Taxes are categorized by the effect they have on the allocation of income and wealth. A proportional tax is one that applies the same relative burden on all taxpayers—i.e., where tax liability and income move in equal levels. A progressive tax is characterizable by a more than proportional rise in the tax onus in relation to the increase in income, and a regressive tax is recognisable by a less than proportional growth in the relative onus. Hence, progressive taxes are thought of as removing a lack of equality in income distribution, while regressive taxes can result in an increase these inequalities.

The taxes that are normally regarded as progressive include individual income taxes and estate taxes. Income taxes that are declarably progressive, however, might become less so for the upper-income group—in particular if a taxpayer is permitted to reduce his tax base by nominating deductions or by excluding some income parts from his taxable income. Proportional tax rates when applied to lower-income classes can also be more progressive if personal exemptions are made.

Income measured over the course of a given period does not definitely offer the most accurate measure of taxpaying ability. For example, transitory increases in income may be saved, and during temporary declines in income a taxpayer may elect to finance consumption by reducing savings. So, if taxation is held in comparison with “permanent income,” it will be less regressive (or more progressive) than when held in comparison with annual income.

Sales taxes and excises (excepting luxuries) tend to be regressive, because the dissemination of individual income consumed or spent for specific goods decreases as the level of personal income increases. Poll taxes (aka head taxes), nominated as a flat amount per capita, obviously are regressive.

It is not simple to classify corporate income taxes and taxes on business as progressive, regressive, or proportionate, because of the uncertainty surrounding the ability of businesses to shift their tax expenses (see below Shifting and incidence). This difficulty of nominating who bears the tax burden lays crucially on whether a national or a subnational (that is, provincial or state) tax is being debated.

In assessing the economic effect of taxation, it is necessary to differentiate between differing points of tax rates. The statutory rates include those nominated in the legislation; generally these are marginal rates, but sometimes they are mean rates. Marginal income tax rates indicate the fraction of incremental income that is taken by taxation when income increases by one dollar. Ergo, if tax burden increases by 45 cents when income increases by one dollar, the marginal tax rate is 45 percent. Income tax legislature often contain graduated marginal rates—i.e., rates that rise as income increases. Careful analysis of marginal tax rates should regard provisions as well as the formal statutory rate structure. If, for example, a particular tax credit (reduction in tax) decreases by 20 cents for each one-dollar growth in income, the marginal rate is 20 percentage points higher than nominated within the statutory rates. Since marginal rates signify how after-tax income changes in response to changes in before-tax income, they are the necessary ones for considering incentive effects of taxation. It is even more difficult to know the marginal effective tax rate applied to income from business and capital, because it may depend on such considerations as the structure of depreciation allowances, the deductibility of interest, and the provisions for inflation adjustment. A basic economic theorem shows that the marginal effective tax rate in income from capital is nothing under a consumption-based tax.

Average income tax rates indicate the part of total income that is taken in taxation. The pattern of average rates is the one that is necessary for considering the distributional equity of taxation. Under a progressive income tax the average income tax rate rises with income. Average income tax rates generally rise with income, both because personal allowances are permitted for the taxpayer and dependents and because marginal tax rates are graduated; on the flip side, preferential treatment of income received predominantly by high-income households could dampen these effects, producing regressivity, as displayed by average tax rates that fall as income rises.
