How to Create a Style Guide

Projectors: LCD Verses DLP (The downfall of DLP technology)

The typical question customers ask when purchasing a new projector for the home, office, or classroom is: do I take an LCD projector or a DLP projector? LCD, short for ‘liquid crystal device’ and DLP, standing for ‘digital light processing’ are the two most common projector imaging technologies. With so many brands and different models available, it can be overwhelming for customers to pick between these technologies. Ultimately LCD projectors give superior image quality and colour accuracy. The article below will explain why DLP projectors struggle with reproducing the same standard of image quality.

Think of a set of blinds in your house covering your bedroom window. By pulling on a rod you can have the shutters open or closed, according to if you want to let light in or not. That is exactly how an LCD projector operates. Each pixel operates like its own shutter on a set of blinds to either shine light through or to block it. DLP on the other hand is created of millions of microscopic mirrors or ‘pixel elements’ as the professionals like to call them. Each pixel element operates to either reflect light or block it.

How the light source is processed from when the projector turns on to when the picture reaches your screen is absolutely significant in regard to image quality, brightness and colour accuracy. LCD projectors shine white light from the lamp by dividing it into red, blue and green components, by three mirrors which transfer the coloured light to 3 different LCD panels. The 3 LCD panels cast the elements of the image by turning each pixel on and off. The pixels are then combined in a glass prism to send the projector image. Something important to realise about LCD projectors is that all three colours are sent onto your projector screen at the same time. The way a DLP projector runs is very different and even the produced image comes out is not the same. With DLP, white light from the lamp is directed through a rotating colour wheel with transparent red, blue and green segments, at speeds up to 11,000 rpm/s. This method of forming an image requires a sequence of red, blue and green light. The millions of micro mirrors mentioned above reflect the coloured light on the pixels to create the image elements. The elements of the image are projected in sequence on the screen, one colour at a time. The viewer’s eye will then pull together each coloured element of the image into a single total image. In LCD projectors, all colours are available all the time to create the highest brightness and great colour accuracy. In DLP, only one colour is available at once, causing lower colour brightness and accuracy. Some DLP manufacturers have put a white segment into the colour wheel to improve all over brightness, but this further detracts from colour accuracy.

I see in forums all the time that DLP has a higher contrast ratio and thus must be better. For those who do not know, the contrast ratio is a measure of a display system defined as the ratio of the luminance of the brightest white to that of the darkest black that the technology is capable of. DLP projectors do possess high contrast specifications compared to most LCD projectors. At a glance, this must be a benefit, however, in the real world, the true black level is determined by the ambient light in the room in which the projector is utilised. Do not be fooled by contrast specifications on websites and in brochures.

When the content you wish to view includes moving images, DLP projection technology also creates image marks, or ‘artifacts’. The most often seen artifact that a DLP projector creates with moving images is colour break up. Colour break up is to be expected in DLP systems because moving images change position between the time red, blue and green colours are pulled up. LCD projectors do not have this problem because all colours are sent at the same time. DLP manufacturers have created 3DLP solutions using 3 chips to answer the colour break up error, but the cost of these projectors make them hardly practical for many businesses and consumers.

Another differentiation between LCD and DLP is how they balance for the refractive qualities of light. Jump back to high school science, and they taught you how the different colours of light refract various amounts when projected through the same lens. The disadvantage with DLP projectors is that they utilise the one same panel for the same lens to project Red, Blue and Green. All 3 colours are obviously different and refract light differently. Most of the time with a DLP projector, some extra yellow colour will be projected above and some blue will come up below an image containing something as simple as a straight black line. While being built LCD projectors can be adjusted to take away these effects on the projected image, because each colour is refracted on separate LCD panels.

The one veritable plus (excluding price) with going with a DLP projector is its overall smaller size and weight. However, this is only relevant to mobility and cannot be traded off against the image superiority of LCD projectors. If overall picture quality is vital to you, then the decision is no-brainer. Yachting and Yacht Clubs

As the Dutch came to preeminence in sea power during the 17th century, the first yacht was a leisure craft used initially by royalty and then by the burghers in the canals and the protected and unprotected waters of the Low Countries. Yacht racing was incidental, coming out of private matches. English yachting started with King Charles II of England during his exile in the Low Countries. On his reaffirmation to the English royalty in 1660, the city of Amsterdam sent him a 20-metre (66-foot) leisure boat with a beam (maximum width) of 5.6 m (18 feet), which he then named Mary. Charles and his brother James, the duke of York (James II, ruled 1685–88), made other yachts and in 1662 raced two of them from the Thames, from Greenwich, to Gravesend, and the same way back, on a £100 punt. Yachting became fashionable among the rich and aristocracy, but after that point the trend did not last.

The first yacht club in the British Isles, the Water Club, was formed in about 1720 at Cork, Ire., as a cruising and unofficial coast guard group, and held much naval panoply and gravity. The closest thing to racing was the “chase,” for which the “fleet” pursued an imaginary enemy. The club persisted, mostly as a social club, until 1765, and in 1828, after joining with other groups, it became the Cork Yacht Club (later the Royal Cork Yacht Club).

Yacht racing was seen in some organized manner on the Thames about the mid-18th century. The duke of Cumberland founded the Cumberland Fleet for Thames racing in 1775. When George IV came to sovereignty in 1820, it was called the Fleet to His Majesty’s Coronation Sailing Society. The Thames Yacht Club seceded following a racing argument, to become the Royal Thames Yacht Club in 1830. The first English yacht society had been initiated at Cowes on the Isle of Wight in 1815, and royal funding made the Solent - the strait between the mainland and the Isle of Wight - the continued location of British yacht racing. The association at Cowes became the Royal Yachting Club, also at the rise of George IV. Each member was required to have boats of at least 20 tons (20,321 kg). Sailing tests for large stakes were held, and the club life was lovely. Ultimately Royal Yachting Club boats grew in size to over 350 tons.

In North America, yachting was first accomplished with the Dutch in New York in the 17th century and went on when the English held power. Sailing was for the most part for leisure and found its high point in George Crowinshield’s Cleopatra’s Barge (1815), which cruised on the Mediterranean Sea and established a standard of luxury and sophistication for the later yachts in the area from the late 19th century. The first continuing American yacht club, the Detroit Boat Club, was started in 1839. In 1844, John C. Stevens began the New York Yacht Club while on board his schooner Gimcrack.

Kinds of sailboats
The Early sailing yachts took the style of such naval craft as brigantines, schooners, and cutters from the 17th century until the second half of the 19th century. The craft of sizeable yachts was originally greatly put upon by the win of America, which was created by George Steers for a group led by John C. Stevens, and it was the boat for which the America’s Cup (q.v.) was named after its success at Cowes in 1851. Early yachts were not designed and manufactured in the modern sense, with only a model used. Not until the later half of the 19th century did what was called naval architecture come into being. Not until the 1920s did the employment of the research of aerodynamics do for the structure of sails and rigging what science had earlier done for hulls.

Because nearly all sailboats had been individually custom-built, there arose a need for handicapping boats as this was before the one-design class boats were made. Thus, a rating rule was written, which is found in the International Rule, accepted in 1906 and revised in 1919. In the present day, one of the fastest growing areas in the sailing industry is that of one-design class boats. All boats in a one-design class are manufactured to single dimensions in length, beam, sail area, and other areas (for an example of a two-person sailboat, see illustration). Racing for those boats can be held on an even basis with no handicapping at all. A prime example is the uniform International America’s Cup Class taken on board for racers in the 1992 America’s Cup race.

For the time that yachting belonged largely for the royal and the rich, cost was no object, and the size of boats increased, in both length and weight. The rise and popularity of smaller craft happened in the second half of the 19th century out of the sailing of the Englishmen R.T. McMullen, a stockbroker, and E.F. Knight, a barrister and journalist. A voyage around the world (1895–98) led single-handedly by the naturalized American captain Joshua Slocum in the 11.3-metre Spray made plain the seaworthiness of smaller yachts. Thereafter in the 20th century, notably after World War II, smaller racing and leisure yachts became commonplace, down to the dinghy, a favourite training boat, of 3.7 m. In the late 20th century, boats of less than 3 m were sailed single-handedly across the Atlantic Ocean.

Kinds of power yachts
After the decade 1840–50, at which point steam started to emulate sail power in public boats, the steam engine, and later the internal-combustion engine, were employed increasingly in pleasure vessels. Bigger power yachts were developed to a high standard, and long-distance travel was a preferred pastime of the affluent. The early power yachts were paddle-wheel boats; these then gave way to boats powered by the completely submerged screw or propeller type of propulsion. Like naval and merchant vessels, auxiliaries possessing both sail and power were the yacht standard for a number of years. By the second half of the 20th century, many yachts were still auxiliaries, but the majority were exclusively power yachts with gasoline or diesel engines.

During the last decade of the 19th century there was a boom in the construction of more sizeable steam yachts. Conspicuous of these was the Mayflower (1897) of 2,690 tons, with triple-expansion engines, twin screws, and a compartmented iron hull, and was operated by a crew of over 150. The Mayflower, purchased by the United States Navy in 1898, was the official yacht of the president of the United States until 1929 and saw active service for World War II.

As more sizeable and more dependable internal-combustion engines were created, many large craft started using them for power. The development of the diesel engine, with heavy oil for fuel, progressed in World War I. During the decade after, big power-yacht creation flourished, hitting a climax in the Orion (1930) at 3,097 tons. From that point the largest auxiliary yacht constructed was the four-masted, steel, barque-rigged Sea Cloud (1931) of 2,323 tons.

The building of large power yachts lessened from 1932, and the style thereafter was in preference of smaller, less costly craft. From World War II, many small naval boats were bought by private owners for conversion to yachts. In the late 20th century, yachting had become a widespread popular competition enjoyed by thousands of yachtsmen personally owning and upkeeping their own small recreational boats. The amount of boats and yachtsmen has increased steadily, not only in the traditional places on the sea but also on inland waterways and lakes.

Proportional, Progressive, and Regressive taxes

Taxes are categorized by the impact they have on the distribution of income and wealth. A proportional tax is one that imposes the same relative requirement on every taxpayer—i.e., in the case where tax liability and income move in the same scale. A progressive tax is recognised by a larger than proportional rise in the tax liability in relation to the increase in income, and a regressive tax is characterized by a less than proportional rise in the comparative onus. Therefore, progressive taxes are thought of as fighting inequity in income distribution, while regressive taxes are found to increase these inequalities.

The taxes that are usually believed to be progressive include individual income taxes and estate taxes. Income taxes that are nominally progressive, however, could become less so for the upper-income demographic—especially if a taxpayer is permitted to reduce his tax base by declaring deductions or by leaving out some particular income parts from his taxable income. Proportional tax rates if applied to lower-income classes can also be more progressive if exemptions of a personal nature are claimed.

Income measured over the period of a year might not absolutely give the most accurate measure of taxpaying ability. For example, transitory growth in income might be saved, and in temporary declines in income a taxpayer may decide to finance consumption by taking from savings. Thus, if taxation is made comparable alongside “permanent income,” it can be less regressive (or more progressive) than if it is compared with annual income.

Sales taxes and excises (except luxuries) are usually regressive, because the portion of individual income consumed or spent for specific goods declines as the level of personal income rises. Poll taxes (also termed head taxes), calculated as a flat amount per capita, obviously are regressive.

It is difficult to classify corporate income taxes and taxes on business as progressive, regressive, or proportionate, principally because of the uncertainty regarding the ability of businesses to shift their tax expenses (see below Shifting and incidence). This difficulty of deciding who bears the tax burden is dependant fundamentally on whether a national or a subnational (that is, provincial or state) tax is being considered.

In analysing the economic effect of taxation, it is essential to differentiate between varied concepts of tax rates. The statutory rates are specified in the legislation; generally speaking these are marginal rates, but in some cases they are average rates. Marginal income tax rates indicate the fraction of incremental income that is taken by taxation when income rises by one dollar. Therefore, if tax onus increases by 45 cents when income grows by one dollar, the marginal tax rate is 45 percent. Income tax laws generally contain graduated marginal rates—i.e., rates that increase as income rises. Structured analysis of marginal tax rates need to regard provisions other than the formal statutory rate structure. If, for example, a particular tax credit (reduction in tax) decreases by 20 cents for each one-dollar growth in income, the marginal rate is 20 percentage points more than nominated within the statutory rates. Since marginal rates display how after-tax income is changed in response to changes in before-tax income, they are the appropriate ones for assessing incentive effects of taxation. It is even more complicated to know the marginal effective tax rate applied to income from business and capital, because it may be reliant on factors including the structure of depreciation allowances, the deductibility of interest, and the provisions for inflation adjustment. A basic economic theorem grants that the marginal effective tax rate in income from capital is zero under a consumption-based tax.

Average income tax rates display the portion of total income that is taken in taxation. The pattern of average rates is the one that is relevant for appraising the distributional equity of taxation. Under a progressive income tax the average income tax rate grows with income. Average income tax rates usually rise with income, both because personal allowances are allowed for the taxpayer and dependents and also because marginal tax rates are graduated; on the flip side, preferential treatment of income received for the most part by high-income households could dampen these effects, allowing regressivity, as indicated by average tax rates that lessen as income grows.
